The Alexander Theatre is part of a $45 million performing arts centre that will be named
The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts in recognition of their $5 million contribution to this project.
Designed by Peter Elliott Architecture and Urban Design, the centre will comprise of a revitalised 561-seat Alexander Theatre, a much loved foundation building of the university, and two new dynamic performance venues – a 130-seat Sound Gallery and 190-seat Jazz Club.
Redevelopment of the Alexander Theatre was completed in April 2018, creating a state of the art proscenium arch venue for the university and surrounding community. It has since hosted a number of events including theatre, dance and music performances. This project has delivered a vast range of improvements for both audiences and performers. These include:
- Improved accessibility throughout the venue
- Sophisticated dressing room space and backstage facilities accommodating up to 300 people backstage
- Inclusion of an active acoustic sound system delivering world’s best practice in
acoustic sound performance
- Automated stage flying system
- Industry standard sound and lighting equipment
The Alexander Theatre heralds a new era of 21st century performing arts facilities at the Clayton campus and will be joined by the Sound Gallery and Jazz Club in early 2019. Together they will further enhance Monash’s commitment to supporting growth in the performing arts in Melbourne’s south-east by providing state-of-the-art facilities to world class professional productions, students, community groups, schools and local residents.
Monash University acts as a beacon for community activity and engagement, attracting over 600,000 non-student visitors to University facilities last year, with the Alexander Theatre one of the drawcards.
